Priorities: The study session “Pluriverse - Peaceful societies with an oppression-free education” focuses on one of the strategic priorities of the Council of Europe youth sector: Living together in peaceful and inclusive societies.
Specifically, it aims to provide participants with the necessary competences (i.e. knowledge, skills and attitudes) to critically analyse educational contents from an intercultural perspective, including decolonisation, privileges and oppressions.
Aim
To broaden the scope of knowledge of those who participate in the session, especially in regard to the topic of decolonizing education, intersectional privilege, and the theory of oppression in education.
Objectives
- To provide participants with knowledge on privileges, oppressions, intercultural dialogue/learning and cooperation with other world regions.
- To provide participants with the skill of critically reviewing their school content and enable them to make recommendations, fostering active participation of young people and access to rights for all.
- To create peaceful and equal society and opportunities for all, by deconstructing the school curricula, content and how young people learn.
- To develop a toolkit/guide for school student unions and school student activists on the topic to build capacities among school student unions and student activists on the topic, disseminating the results of the Study Session
- To draft follow-up actions to take place at local and national level, applying the competences learned as well as the tools from the toolkit
Organisers
The Organising Bureau of European School Student Unions (OBESSU) is the platform for cooperation between the national school student unions active in general secondary and secondary vocational education in Europe. It was founded in April 1975 in Dublin, Ireland and brings together Member, Candidate and Affiliate Organisations from all over Europe. All Member Organisations are independent, national, representative and democratic school student organisations. It strives to provide student unions with assistance in developing school student representative structures; enable exchange of experience and good practice; promote equal access to education and to strive for the end of discrimination and injustice within the educational systems; as well as to contribute to the development of democratic educational systems in Europe.
Outcomes
The expected outputs of the Study Session are:
- a) a toolkit for school student unions and student activists, which will be comprised of a short, graphic and youth-friendly guide
- explaining the main concepts that had been worked on throughout the Study Session, the importance of the topic and linking to further resources in order to raise awareness and multiply the effect of the Study Session.
- b) follow-up actions, which have been planned out by the respective representatives of student unions that took part in the Study Session, mostly taking the form of national and local events aimed at disseminating the findings of the Study Session.
