Back Remembering, resisting and rebuilding: Combating together antigypsyism for inclusive societies

Youth Express Network (Y-E-N) in cooperation with Youth of European Nationalities (YEN)

 Aim

The study session aims to empower young Roma and non-Roma participants with knowledge, awareness and motivation to combat antigypsyism, promote inclusivity and take action as active citizens in their communities, with a particular focus on the 80th anniversary of Roma Genocide.

  Objectives

The objectives of the study session are:

  • To encourage participants' critical reflection on the concept of “othering” by examining personal prejudices and biases and understanding their impact on everyday life.
  • To provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the historical context of antigypsyism, including the Roma Genocide and its impact on Roma communities as well as to raise awareness of the manifestation of antigypsyism and discrimination nowadays.
  • To motivate young Roma and non-Roma to be advocates for the recognition of Roma and Sinti Holocaust by equipping them with different commemoration techniques and strengthening their activism at their local level as multipliers.
  • To empower participants to develop their own action plans to combat antigypsyism by emphasising the importance of remembrance and commemoration in promoting inclusivity and understanding.
  • To associate participants with the Council of Europe’s work on the topic of combatting antigypsyism, including Recommendation CM/Rec(2023)4 of the Committee of Ministers to member States on Roma youth participation.

 About the organisation(s)

Youth Express Network (Y-E-N) is a European network of grass-root youth organisations. Our vision is to reach an inclusive society, where young people, their needs and participation are recognised, valued and appreciated. Through their network of youth organisations, social/youth workers youth leaders, and young people, they work at European, regional and local level to foster social inclusion of young people. To reach their goal, they implement and take part in networking activities, training courses, seminars, cross-border projects, local workshops and researches on youth and social issues. Additionally, they encourage young people with fewer opportunities to make their voice heard in local, regional and international institutions.

Youth of European Nationalities (YEN) is the largest network of youth organizations of autochthonous, national and linguistic minorities in Europe. Under the slogan “Living Diversity”, YEN represents the interests of young members of national, ethnic and linguistic minorities. Currently (as of April 2020) 41 member organizations from 18 countries are represented in YEN. YEN is run and led by young people, for young people, and it sees itself as a self-determined and self-organized youth organization, whose activity is carried out and determined by youth.
