The Compass long-term training course on human rights education and democratic citizenship for youth multipliers and trainers was the main activity of the project Capacity Building of Youth Leaders and Activists from Azerbaijan, Human Rights Education and Democratic Citizenship.

 

The training course aimed to enhance the quality of human rights education with young people, and also the quality of non-formal education through the development of competences (knowledge, skills, attitudes) of youth workers, leaders and trainers, in order to implement educational projects and activities at local, regional and national levels in Azerbaijan. There were 27 participants from a variety of regions and youth organisations of Azerbaijan who attended the course.

The course was designed to give participants the opportunity to experience and reflect on activities and concepts central to human rights education, and based on experiential learning approaches. The long-term training course combined various learning features, activities and working methods for the personal and professional development of the participants based on non-formal education and experiential learning.

Main results

The evaluation of the course revealed the following main results for the participants:

  • Strengthened competences as human rights educators, and confidence in running educational activities based on Compass and its approaches
  • Understanding and ability to apply the quality criteria of non-formal education activities of the Council of Europe to their own activities and projects
  • Deeper understanding of the priorities and approaches for youth educational activities of the Council of Europe Youth Department, such as non-formal education, intercultural dialogue, social inclusion, and youth participation, and how to apply and adapt these to Azerbaijani youth policy and youth work
  • Increased ability to assume the role of human rights educator and trainer in the context of lifelong learning, and based on principles of critical thinking
  • Confidence to act as multiplier of Council of Europe values and approaches and to continue their work in human rights education within and beyond the reality of youth work in Azerbaijan
  • Ability to plan own learning and development as a trainer, and increased confidence to initiate or join an informal network of human rights educators, trainers and practitioners in Azerbaijan.
