Advancing planetary health and youth participation: study session held in Budapest

The Council of Europe Youth Department, in co-operation with the Youth Health Organization, has organised a dynamic study session titled “Exploring Planetary Health: Climate, Rights, and Participation.”

Held at the European Youth Centre Budapest from 9 - 14 February, the event brought together 26 young people from across Europe committed to shaping a fairer, healthier, and more sustainable future.

The programme combined interactive workshops, peer learning, debates, simulations, and expert-led sessions, offering an open space to understand the deep interconnections between the climate crisis, public health, and youth democratic participation.

The aim of the study session was empowerment. Going beyond the expansion of knowledge, participants also developed practical advocacy skills - learning how young people can influence policy, engage in decision‑making, and drive meaningful change in their communities.

“It was truly inspiring to be in a room full of such motivated young planetary health advocates. I felt that sharing my own experiences could offer some guidance, but at the same time, I was also energised by their questions and perspectives. It reminded me once again how powerful and insightful peer education can be”, said the lecturer Sila Gürbüz, medical doctor and planetary health advocate.

The study session emphasised the essential role of young people in shaping planetary health solutions and reaffirmed the Council of Europe’s commitment to supporting youth participation in building a sustainable, inclusive and rights-moved future.

“I particularly valued the depth of discussions and the way participants from diverse fields built meaningful bridges beyond disciplinary boundaries. I am especially grateful for having expanded my knowledge of policy-making processes, in particular the role that youth can play in shaping Council of Europe decisions”, concluded Rafael Papyan, youth worker and Vice-President of BIL, Armenian youth NGO.
