The Current Affairs Committee will meet on 28 June 2023 in the Palais de l’Europe, Strasbourg, France. The meeting will be opened by the Chair of the Committee, Thomas Andersson (Sweden, ILDG), followed by the communication of the Secretary General of the Congress, Mathieu Mori.

The Committee members will discuss the following items to advance on the preparation of relevant Congress reports:

  • “Local and regional media as watchdogs of democracy”;
  • “Ageing communities - quality social care as a matter of human rights”;
  • “Local and  regional  responses  to  major  crises:  between emergency interventions and post-crisis reconstruction”

The Committee will also hold an exchange of views with the President of the Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA), on “The  role  of  local  and  regional  authorities  in  combatting  trafficking  in human beings” and engage in a thematic debate on “Current challenges concerning youth and youth policies” with a view to identifying new topics for future Congress reports.

ELECTION

The members of the Current Affairs Committiee elected Joanne Louise LABAN (United Kingdom, ECR) as 1st Vice-Chair of the Committee.

The Current Affairs Committee is responsible for exploring the role of local and regional authorities with regard to the major challenges of our society and preparing work on thematic issues such as social cohesion, education, intercultural and interreligious dialogue, youth participation, integration of migrants, protection of children, and gender equality from the point of view of the Council of Europe’s core values.
