Liechtenstein has taken over the rotating Chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers from Latvia at a meeting with representatives of the organisation’s 46 member states.

The outgoing Chair of the Committee of Ministers, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Reinis Brusbārdis, handed over the Presidency to he new Chairperson of the Committee of Ministers, Dominique Hasler, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Education and Sport of Liechtenstein – who presented the priorities of  her country’s Presidency which will run for six months, until 17 May 2024.

Liechtenstein’s Presidency will focus on five main priorities:

“United by our values …”

• Strengthening the fundamental values of human rights, democracy and the rule of law;
• Following-up on the Reykjavík Summit, including accountability for the most serious crimes in the war of aggression against Ukraine;
• Strengthening of the European Court of Human Rights, particularly improving execution of judgments;
• Holding a Ministerial Session combined with celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe;
• Enhancing Freedom of expression and in particular safety of journalists.
