Congress Secretary General Andreas Kiefer addressed the Committee of Ministers at Deputies level on 13 October. He gave an overview of the work done since March 2021 and underlined that the thematic, statutory and operational activities of the Congress address current threats on democracy and gave examples on how local and regional politicians contribute to preventing the erosion of democracy from inside, to ensuring trust in democratic institutions, to successfully promoting anti-corruption schemes and human rights as well as gender equality.
Secretary General Kiefer asked for a progressive return to a share of the budget which is commensurate with its mandate and tasks and which makes best use of the Congress‘ potential, network and outreach to contribute to achieving the objectives of the Council of Europe as a whole.
The Congress Secretary General communication to the Deputies takes place twice per year as part of the dialogue that the Congress has developed with the Committee of Ministers.
