Georgian local authorities and the Public Defender of Georgia, Nino Lomjaria, held a roundtable discussion on 6 June 2022 on the Public Defender's report on the situation of human rights and freedoms in Georgia for 2021 and on the recommendations addressed to local authorities.
While the Public Defender presents her yearly reports to the Georgian Parliament, this is the first time that such a dialogue has been established directly with local authorities. The aim is to strengthen co-operation between all levels of governance for the protection of human rights by encouraging regular exchanges between the Public Defender and local authorities for better consideration of her recommendations at the territorial level.
The round table was organised by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in collaboration with the National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia (NALAG) within the framework of the Congress' cooperation project in the country. It brought together members of the NALAG Executive Board, representatives of the Public Defender Office, as well as members of the Forum of Exchange developed within the project – a unique platform of dialogue for local authorities to address challenges in improving social inclusion, promoting equal opportunities, and incorporating a gender perspective in the local political action.
