Council of Europe Congress monitors the application of the European Charter of Local Self-Government in Latvia

A delegation from the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe composed of rapporteurs Jorge Sequeira (Portugal, SOC/G/PD) and Gobnait Ni Mhuimneacain (Ireland, ILDG), carried out a monitoring visit to Latvia from 20 to 22 February 2024 to assess the application of the European Charter of Local Self-Government. The delegation met, among others, with the Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, the Minister of Finance, the Speaker of the Parliament and the President of the Constitutional Court. The rapporteurs also held an exchange of views with representatives of Latvian local and regional authorities.

Latvia ratified the European Charter of Local Self-Government in 1996. Countries that have ratified the Charter are bound by its provisions. The Charter requires respect for a minimum number of rights, which form the European foundation of local self-government. The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities ensures that these principles are respected.
