‘Rise: Design for emergent futures’ is a study session for youth workers and trainers implemented by the Don Bosco Youth Network (DBYN) in cooperation with the Council of Europe. The course aims to train volunteers of DBYN’s member organisations to increase their knowledge and capacities in non-formal education and youth work. The activity is organised as a study session at the European Youth Centre of Strasbourg from Sunday 26 November to Saturday 2nd December.
The session will develop new opportunities and methods through emergency times or situations. The volunteers and youth workers will explore questions related to human rights and human rights-based education, facilitation, and the already existing tools, for developing and improving their abilities in their daily youth-work service. A combination of non-formal methods including theoretical input, methods from COMPASS, simulation games and experiential learning will inform the programme.
In the second part of the session, emphasis will be placed on a deductive learning process building up practical skills to develop and implement learning sessions and tools. This is done by introducing the participants to different educational styles and experts’ sessions such as a conflict management and reflecting on how it can be adapted and applied by the participants.
Emergent design concerns and serves a as dynamic problem-solving and decision-making method frequently utilized in the realms of software development and complex systems. In youth work it has practical applications in addressing multifaceted challenges like the polycrisis affecting many young people today. At its core, emergent design promotes a flexible approach to problem-solving. Emergent design allows solutions to evolve as the situation unfolds, accommodating new information and unforeseen developments. This is what the study session should prepare participants for: a mindset of continuous improvement over the pursuit of a single, definitive solution, considering also a holistic perspective.
