The study session is organised with the Rural Youth Europe which is a European network that brings together rural youth organizations to empower young people from rural areas through non-formal education, international exchanges, and advocacy for stronger youth participation in rural development policies.
Aim
The study session aims to enhance media literacy among rural youth by equipping participants with the skills to critically assess information, combat disinformation, and strengthen their engagement with democratic institutions at local, national, and European levels. It addresses the specific realities of rural communities, where limited access to diverse media sources and digital infrastructures can increase vulnerability to disinformation, political disengagement, and radicalisation.
Objectives
The key objectives of the study session are to:
- Analyse challenges and opportunities related to media literacy in rural communities and explore how disinformation affects rural youth, including its impact on political participation and social cohesion;
- Build practical media literacy skills, including identifying credible sources, understanding media bias, and recognising disinformation tactics, with a focus on rural contexts;
- Develop critical thinking skills by encouraging analytical reflection, empowering rural youth to question, verify, and evaluate the information they encounter;
- Promote active civic engagement by fostering a sense of responsibility and capability among participants to engage constructively with political systems and advocate for their rural communities.
