Back Map the Chart: Advancing Students’ Rights through National Student Rights Charters

European Students’ Union (ESU)

 Aim

The aim of the study session “Map the Chart: Advancing Students’ Rights through National Student Rights Charters” is to increase participants knowledge and capacity to develop their own Student Rights Charter, thereby equipping them to advocate for their rights at their national and institutional (Higher Education Institutions) level.

 Objectives

The specific objectives of the study session are as follows:

  • Student participation: Raise awareness of the relevance of youth participation in different countries. It aims to reach a constructive dialogue and create an environment of connection and exchange on the common issues faced by students, according to the revised European Charter on the Participation of Young People in Local and Regional Life.
  • Student Rights Charter: Get familiar with the ESU Student Rights Charter and an example of National Unions of Students Rights Charter (Romania) and reflect on their practical use debating its importance and possibilities, following its adoption at the Council of Europe level.
  • Capacity Building: Equip students with the necessary competencies to design their own national campaigns for a student rights charter, and to learn how to cooperate with local, regional and national stakeholders for the drafting and negotiation of the SRC.
  • Intercultural Learning: Encourage cooperation among students in their endeavours to create a National Student Rights Charter.        

 About the organisation

The study session is organised by The European Students’ Union (ESU) is the umbrella organisation of 45 National Unions of Students (NUS) from 40 countries.

The NUSes are open to all students in their respective country regardless of political persuasion, religion, ethnic or cultural origin, sexual orientation or social standing. Members are also student-run, autonomous, representative and operate according to democratic principles.

ESU was formerly known as ESIB – The National Unions of Students in Europe.
