As part of ongoing efforts to support the Republic of Moldova in aligning its legal and judicial framework with European standards, on 26-27 May 2027, the Council of Europe organised a two-days’ training on the role and importance of the judiciary in safeguarding freedom of expression and media freedom. The activity was organised in partnership with the National Institute of Justice of the Republic of Moldova and brought together 30 judges, prosecutors and lawyers from across the country.
The training aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of the core principles underpinning the rule of law within the European framework, as well as the mechanisms available for its protection. Particular emphasis referred to the judicial independence, freedom of expression, the protection of journalists and the role of courts in ensuring the effective implementation of Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The programme, led by experts and practitioners, combined presentations, case studies and practical discussions focused on the evolution of the European Court of Human Rights’ jurisprudence concerning the freedom of expression of judges and prosecutors, freedom of expression and the protection of journalists, protection of journalistic sources, as well as the Council of Europe Recommendation on anti-SLAPP and the EU relevant Directive.
The activity was carried out with the support of the Council of Europe, within the framework of the project “Advancing Media Freedom in the Republic of Moldova.”
