Youth workers strengthen their skills in human rights education through Compass regional training course in Bordeaux

From 6 to 10 October 2026, youth workers and educators from five European countries (France, Italy, Spain, Croatia and Greece) are taking part in the “International Team for Human Rights” training course, organised by Maison de l’Europe des Landes WIPSEE in cooperation with the Council of Europe Youth Department in Bordeaux, France.

The training course is the sixth edition of the International Team project, which was first launched in Dax, France in 2021. It brings together youth workers from across Europe to strengthen their international, intercultural and professional competences and to support them in developing projects that place human rights and democratic participation at their centre.

Held within the framework of the Youth for Democracy programme 2026, the training puts human rights education at the heart of the learning process. Participants explore, experience and apply non-formal education approaches and practical tools that can be used to promote human rights with young people. A central resource throughout the course is the Council of Europe Compass manual for human rights education with young people. Through experiential and participatory learning, participants develop their ability to use human rights education as a practical approach to empowering young people, addressing human rights challenges and encouraging democratic participation.

The training also aims to strengthen a European network of youth workers able to design, coordinate and implement international and intercultural projects focused on human rights. Participants develop competences in European project development and management, intercultural cooperation and human rights education, enabling them to act as multipliers and bring what they learn back to their organisations and local communities.

The course objectives include familiarising youth workers with human rights education resources and methodologies, strengthening their skills as European project leaders, and increasing their understanding of European cooperation frameworks. It also seeks to foster new partnerships between participants and their organisations and to encourage future cooperation opportunities.

The activity is supported by Erasmus+ through the Erasmus+ Youth programme, in cooperation with the Council of Europe Youth Department.
