On 17 November 2025, Ms Maria Tanaka, Associate Professor at the University of Tsukuba, and Mr Kazuyoshi Hosodo, former member of Teikyo University visited the European Youth Centre in Strasbourg.

The two academics were accompanied by Ms Marie Herjean, Japanese court-appointed expert at the Colmar Court of Appeal, who provided Japanese-French interpretation.

They were welcomed by members of the Education, Training and Cooperation Division of the Council of Europe's Youth Department. Interested in the activities and methodology of the youth sector in the field of human rights education, the two academics enquired about recent publications and the main trends observed by the Council of Europe's youth sector in this area.

The academics also mentioned the value of translating the latest versions of Compass and Compasito, the Council of Europe's manuals on human rights education for young people and children, into Japanese.

Ms Tanaka presented projects carried out in Japan, including a series of seminars on human rights education. The growing interest in promoting human rights in Japan and the expertise and resources provided by the Council of Europe's youth sector in this context were highlighted.

The meeting concluded with a visit of the European Youth Centre.
