Study session: “Youth Work to make Housing First for Youth…WORK! “

The study session “Youth Work to make Housing First for Youth…WORK!” was hosted by FEANTSA Youth and Housing First Europe Hub from 3 to 7 October at the European Youth Centre Budapest. FEANTSA is the European Federation of National Organizations Working with the Homeless and the only European NGO focusing on exclusively on the fight against homelessness. This study session gathered 31 young people from 12 different countries.

Youth Work to make Housing First for Youth…WORK! aimed at supporting the scaling up of Housing First for Youth across Europe, as a human rights-based approach that puts the principles of youth work at the core of how to understand and respond to young people’s experience of homelessness. The study session was designed to develop a concrete understanding of human rights and youth work, develop skills, and gain an understanding with a view how they can strengthen the delivery of Housing First for Youth.

This was done through diverse sessions, such as Framing Youth Homelessness within Human Rights, providing an overview and history of why Housing First for Youth is different to ‘adult’ Housing First, understanding core principles in designing trainings, sharing experiences from participants around key topics when it comes to delivering a Housing First for Youth service etc., which enabled young people to develop necessary skills and knowledge for understanding, reducing and preventing youth homelessness in their communities.

Besides that, this study session was enriched by two guest lectures: Tracey Longworth who spoke about advocacy and how to make the case for Housing First for Youth from a social housing company’s perspective, and Bill Rowlands who spoke about networks, coalition building and action planning for Housing First for youth inspiring participants by the progress made in Wales.
