Today, the Council of Europe and the Ministry for Social Policy and Children’s Rights of Malta, under the auspices of the European Committee for Social Cohesion (CCS), are holding a Conference on “The Transition of Jobs: Changing Labour Markets and the Impact on Social Cohesion” – in Attard, Malta, and via videoconference.
The Conference aims to provide a forum for discussions, on the one hand, about new risks stemming from digitalisation and IT developments and, on the other, from the transition to a green economy, and ways they impact the labour market. Its main objective is to discuss the changing dynamics of the labour market caused by the transition of jobs, the development of the platform and atypical work, and the challenges accompanying the transition of jobs vis-à-vis the green economy.
The Conference has brought together national policymakers, civil servants, representatives of academia and other stakeholders to discuss risks and possible policy-level responses to the challenges for the labour market stemming from digitalisation and IT developments and from the transition to a green economy.
Quotes from the opening session
Mr. Joe GERADA, the Chair of the European Committee for Social Cohesion: “ The transition of jobs is anything but clear; we know that we are transitioning as we breath and live it each day, but we do not exactly know what the destination will look like or how we will function in the new arrangements”.
Dr Andy ELLUL, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue, within the Office of the Prime Minister of Malta : “Technology will continue to evolve and develop, whether we like it or not. And this means that we, together with all social partners, must learn to embrace these changes and be proactive in terms of trying to anticipate the various challenges that may impact workers’ rights and livelihoods as a result of these developments. “
Dr Michael FALZON, Minister for Social Policy and Children's Rights of Malta: “We need to make sure that digi work is also decent work and that such technologies are designed to assist and to work with workers and not to displace them. Progress can only be described as being an advancement, when it benefits everyone; workers, employers and society in general.”
Mr Jan Malinowski, Head of the Social Rights Department, Council of Europe: “Humanity has been experiencing transition of jobs for a very long time, however, speed of these changes has never been so fast. Therefore, it makes it crucial to come up with responses before it is too late. “
