Retour Spain strengthens journalist safety with specialized training programs

In an effort to enhance the safety and protection of journalists, particularly in high-risk situations such as protests and demonstrations, the Spanish Ministry of Interior has implemented a series of specialized training programs in collaboration with professional media associations and security forces.

The initiatives include the IV HEAT Course for Media Personnel, held from 18 to 22 November 2024 at the Civil Guard Special Training Center (CAE) in Logroño. Organized jointly with Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the course focused on personal safety techniques, situational awareness, and risk management for journalists operating in conflict or high-risk environments.

Earlier in 2024, the III Emergency Communication Seminar for Journalists, hosted by the Madrid Press Association (APM), provided training on the role of journalists during emergencies and disasters. Participants learned about Spain’s Civil Protection framework and strategies for effective communication in crisis situations.

Additionally, ongoing self-protection training programs are offered for journalists covering protests and demonstrations. Developed in partnership with the Federation of Spanish Journalists’ Associations (FAPE) and other professional bodies, these workshops include practical exercises on safety protocols, on-the-ground identification, and strategies for managing potentially hazardous situations.

According to the Ministry of Interior, these training initiatives are part of Spain’s broader commitment to safeguarding freedom of expression and protecting journalists as essential actors in democratic society. Training cycles are set to continue throughout 2025, ensuring that media professionals are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to work safely in the field.
