In February 2023, Slovak Republic hosted a Media Freedom Conference organised under the auspices of the Media Freedom Coalition, which brought together state authorities, journalists, and civil society to address key challenges related to journalist safety, editorial independence, and the growing impact of SLAPPs. The conference presented new survey data highlighting the scale and nature of threats faced by journalists in Slovakia and served as an important catalyst for follow-up measures. One concrete outcome was the launch of Safe.Journalism.sk in March 2023, a state-independent support and monitoring initiative coordinated by the Ján Kuciak Investigative Centre, which focuses on documenting attacks against journalists and providing practical assistance, including legal support, security training, online threat response, and structured cooperation with law-enforcement authorities. Building on the commitments and recommendations emerging from the conference, the Slovak Police established regional police contact points in September 2023, enabling journalists to report threats and attacks directly at local level, with cases coordinated through Safe.Journalism.sk to improve responsiveness, trust, and protection mechanisms.
