The Italian Chamber of Deputies has unanimously approved a bill to establish a National Day in memory of journalists killed while performing their duties. The proposed law, which now awaits final approval from the Senate, designates 3 May as the annual date of commemoration—coinciding with World Press Freedom Day.
The National Day aims to honour journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty and to promote broader public awareness about the importance of press freedom and the role of journalism in democratic societies.
According to the bill, the following key activities will be promoted:
- Commemorative Events: Government institutions at all levels—including the state, regions, metropolitan cities, and municipalities—will be encouraged to organise ceremonies, conferences, and public events to mark the day.
- Awareness-Raising Campaigns: The Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with professional journalist associations and the Department for Information and Publishing, will launch public campaigns. These will focus on the significance of press freedom and the media’s role in upholding pluralism and democracy. Public service broadcasters will be required to provide free airtime to support these initiatives.
- Educational Initiatives: Universities, journalism schools, and educational institutions will be invited to organise activities that highlight the importance of journalism and freedom of expression. These efforts will also promote understanding of Article 21 of the Italian Constitution, which guarantees press freedom.
- Combating Hate Speech: Dedicated campaigns will address the increasing threats and online harassment faced by journalists—especially women. These efforts will aim to counteract hate speech, body shaming, and digital violence, underscoring their harmful impact on investigative journalism and public trust in the media.
Once passed by the Senate, the law will reinforce Italy’s commitment to defending press freedom and commemorating the sacrifices made by journalists in pursuit of truth and accountability.
