The municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia has been strongly affected by the increase in global migration flows with immigration to the municipality having increased by over 200% in the last decade. In this context, collaborative social work has been strengthened to safeguard the fundamental rights of migrants arriving in this territory through a humane policy to welcome newcomers based on social inclusion for all.

The Municipality is committed to contributing to a pluralistic and inclusive society, as a territory that has integrated the theme of interculturality into its strategic public policy planning documents for several years, which has been reflected in a greater commitment to social intervention projects.

The Intercultural Route is an annual event that celebrates cultural diversity through diverse and inspiring initiatives that promote intercultural dialogue between migrants, diverse ethnic groups and the host community. The municipality also provides specialised information and support services to facilitate integration, namely the Emigrant Support Office (GAE) and the Local Centre for the Integration of Migrants (CLAIM).
