Estonian courts are celebrating the Administration of Justice Week at the beginning of October, which was held for the eighth time this year.

The aim of the week is to introduce the work of the courts to the public and to bring justice closer to the people. This year, the main focus of the events was on young people.

As a central activity, the courts organized, in cooperation with the prosecutor's office, a video campaign which showedthrough three actual stories how easily a young person could get into a court out of ignorance or boldness and face life with a criminal sentence. In the videos, judges, prosecutors and even young people themselves describe cases of violence, identity theft on social media, and the delivery of drugs.

We showed videos on social media, traditional media and in cinemas before the movies started. We also shared them with the Facebook pages of the schools. As a supporting activity, judges and prosecutors talked about the relevant topics on both television and radio and articles were written for the newspaper.

The second major campaign was in cooperation with the non-profit association Back to School, in the framework of which the judges gave guest e-lessons to students from first to last grade. During the classes, they talked in more detail about the work behind the scenes of judicial work and human rights, discussing, among other things, why people go to court themselves. Dozens and dozens of schools were able to watch the lessons simultaneously via the platform.

In addition, successful historical excursions "In the Footsteps of Justice" took place in two major Estonian cities, in Tallinn and Tartu. Young people were also able to solve the crossword puzzle on justice through social media and to participate in the game "Which profession would suit you in court". A sample court hearing was held for students who are studying to become court clerks and they could practice their work as court clerks.

A cultural program is usually always a part of theAdministration of Justice Week. This year we decided not to invite people to the cinema because of the situation caused by covid-19, but instead guided them to read. Namely, we invited all book lovers to look for books where the work of judges or justice plays a central role! Participation in this was also active!

We also paid special attention to internal communication. For example, several courts organized a step-count competition - the goal was to gather in a week the amount of steps that would allow you to reach the European Court of Justice from our home country!

An English version of the video introducing the chapter of the courts made within the framework of the celebration of the 100th birthday of the Constitution of the Republic of Estonia has been prepared especially for the celebration of the European Day of Justice.
