The Council of Europe Sport Division contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030)

The United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development lists 17 objectives to be achieved to build a society inclusive, sustainable and prosperous. The Council of Europe contributes to its implementation through a human rights-based approach based on its pan-European and multi-stakeholder dimension, its standards, its monitoring/follow-up bodies and processes, its technical support provided to individual countries for capacity-building and removing obstacles to implementation and its global outreach.
The Council of Europe is helping its member states to tackle the major issues in sport today, from doping, match-fixing and dangerous stadiums to the abuse of young athletes and discrimination. With the support of its Sport Division, which is responsible for developing, promoting and implementing innovative legal instruments that uphold the integrity and values of sport while promoting human rights, the Council of Europe facilitates co-operation in the field of sport at local, national and international levels.
The Sport Division work focuses on 7 of the 17 objectives defined in the United Nations Agenda 2030:
"37. Sport is also an important enabler of sustainable development. We recognize the growing contribution of sport to the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives."
