Summary of the project: The “Sound of Sport” project, running from January to December 2018, is one of the 14 pilot projects (out of 39) selected for co-financing by the European Commission from the call for proposals “Monitoring and coaching, through sports, of youngsters at risk of radicalisation”. The “Sound of Sport” project aims to help youngsters at risk of exclusion and radicalisation, including young refugees, to find a sense of belonging into Salzburg’s community by supporting their access to and participation in organised sport activities. In the preparation phase, around 15-20 coaches, people with a sporting background working mostly in ASVÖ Salzburg’s member organisations, will be trained in the field of intercultural understanding, detection and (re)action to radicalisation and extremism as well as coaching and mentoring. Parallel to the trainings, young people (including refugees) at risk of exclusion and radicalisation in two age groups (7-12, 13-18) will be identified and selected (around 40-80 youngsters). For a period of 4-6 months, young people at risk together with “mainstream” youngsters will participate in sport trainings, conducted by trained coaches. The impacts of regular and specialised sport trainings on young people at risk will be assessed and evaluated with the help of child psychologists, feeding into an information material on lessons learned and conclusions, possibly accompanied by policy recommendations. A final conference will be organised with the participation of European policy-makers and stakeholders to disseminate project results. Communication activities will be an integral part of the project design.
