Sustainable development of Ukraine must be grounded on local self-government principles

The Congress supports international alliances and decentralisation to empower local and regional authorities and their associations in building resilient and sustainable cities.

“The Congress continues to support the reform of local self-government and decentralisation in Ukraine. We will push for a proper set of administrative, legislative and financial resources to effectively pursue these reforms. ”, stressed Congress Secretary General, Mathieu Mori, during the Conference organised by the Association of Ukrainian Cities on “Local self-government as the basis for the European integration of Ukraine” on 7 July 2023 in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Participating in the discussion on the approaches and principles of restoration and sustainable development of municipalities, their infrastructure and economy in the context of the implementation of decentralisation, Congress Secretary General highlighted that the European Charter of Local self-government will remain the basis to further enhance local democracy. “The Congress is working on  a green reading of the Charter that recognises the fundamental right to a healthy environment. Local and regional authorities have a significant role to play in protecting this right and human rights overall”, he concluded.
