The recording of the webinar on ‘Behavioural addictions facilitated by information and communication technologies – risks and perspectives’ is now available

On 3 December 2020 together with the Information Society Department of the Council of Europe the Pompidou Group organised the first Digital Development Online Event on ‘Behavioural addictions facilitated by information and communication technologies – risks and perspectives’. The event was opened and concluded with statements by Patrick Penninckx, Head of the Information Society Department, and Thomas Kattau, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Pompidou Group. The live event provided an understanding of the functioning of the ‘attention economy’ which creates ‘persuasive technologies’ to capture the attention and time of internet users. This phenomenon might lead to an increase in behavioural disorders and addictions. More specifically links have now been established between the use of drugs and addiction to online gambling and gaming. The Pompidou Group’s revised mandate, to be adopted in 2021, is expected to mandate the Group to tackle these new addictions.

Speakers

  • Yves Citton, professor in Literature and Media at the Université Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis
  • Antti Järventaus, development manager at Save the Children Finland
