CARICOM IMPACS and Octopus Project: Regional trainings on cybercrime for magistrates and prosecutors in the Caribbean region

During the second half of January 2022, the Council of Europe, through its Octopus Project, contributed to a series of online trainings on cybercrime for magistrates and prosecutors organised by the Caribbean Community Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS).

Between 18-20 January 2022, the Council of Europe supported three sessions with presentations on international cooperation, the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime and mutual legal assistance, addressed to magistrates and prosecutors from Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Guyana, Dominican Republic, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Montserrat, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname.

Between 25-27 January 2022, magistrates and prosecutors from the same Caribbean countries were addressed, with presentations on standard operating procedures for electronic evidence, as well as with a live demonstration on digital forensics.

In previous months, a series of domestic workshops on cybercrime legislation and electronic evidence have been organised in the region by the Caribbean Community Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS) and the Council of Europe in the framework of the Octopus Project, as a follow-up to the regional workshop held back in July 2020.

Through the Octopus Project, the Council of Europe will continue to provide support to countries in the Caribbean region to build capacities to fight cybercrime and other offences involving electronic evidence, as well as for legislative alignment with international best practices based on the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime as a global standard. The Council of Europe gratefully acknowledges voluntary contributions of the donors to this project.
