This toolkit applies the Anti-rumours Approach to issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC), with the aim of addressing disinformation, prejudice, discriminatory narratives and hate speech affecting LGBTIQ people.

Rather than reacting to harmful narratives, the Approach promotes prevention by addressing their underlying social and institutional causes and supporting proactive and constructive strategies that foster lasting change. It emphasises critical thinking, the development of alternative and transformative narratives, the creation of safe spaces for dialogue, encounter and recognition, and the strengthening of participation and sustainable collaboration among a wide range of actors.

The Anti-rumours Approach tackles misinformation, disinformation, prejudice and harmful narratives through a systemic approach built on critical thinking and social and institutional change.

The 10 principles below describe how to respond to rumours and harmful narratives in a lasting, constructive way:

Ten Principles of the Anti-rumors Approach >>

Structured into three sections, the toolkit brings together 16 practical tools to support each stage of the process. It begins with the assessment of local contexts, narratives, key actors and challenges, followed by guidance on the design of anti-rumours actions, and concludes with step-by-step support for developing an Anti-rumours Strategy.

Overall, it provides a comprehensive framework to help public authorities, civil society organisations and other local stakeholders design context-specific responses grounded in a human rights-based approach, contributing to more inclusive, equitable and discrimination-free communities.
