Conference on the Role of the European Convention on Human Rights in Advancing Equality for LGBTI Persons

The Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Unit, in cooperation with the European Court of Human Rights and its Registry, is organising a conference to mark the 70th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Conference, entitled “A ‘Living Instrument’ for Everyone: The Role of the European Convention on Human Rights in Advancing Equality for LGBTI persons”, will take place on 8 October 2020 with simultaneous online broadcasting. It will open at 9.20 a.m. and close at 3.10 p.m. CET. After the event, the recording of the Conference will be available for viewing on the Court’s website.

Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and Marialena Tsirli, Deputy Registrar of the Court, will open the Conference. Robert Spano, President of the Court, will deliver a keynote message.

The Conference will highlight and celebrate progress achieved in equality for LGBTI persons in Europe through the Convention mechanism with a view, and make it more visible to the general public. The Conference will be as a platform for exchange between Judges of the Court, representatives of different bodies of the Council of Europe, and representatives of civil society about challenges and approaches in achieving real and sustainable equality for LGBTI persons.

The event, open to all online without registration, will benefit of simultaneous interpretation in English and French.
