MedNET members discuss 15 years of achievements

The Pompidou Group’s Mediterranean Network (MedNET) held its 27th steering Committee meeting in an online format. No less than thirty participants including representatives from EMCDDA, European Commission and UNODC looked back on 15 years of existence and discussed its present and future activities.

The presentation and discussion of the evaluation report on the impact of 15 years of MedNET gave the opportunity to measure its impact and to assess the lessons learned. It highlights:

  • A strong commitment of all MedNET members,
  • That MedNET has been instrumental in raising awareness, in reducing stigma towards drug use and addictions, and in supporting the development of a public health and human rights-based approach to drug policy,
  • Major achievements such as data comparability with the MedSPAD survey, professional training, accreditation of addictology diplomas, and a specific focus on gender needs,
  • That MedNET is based on a democratic policy with equal cooperation and consideration of country achievements and needs.

The committee decided to introduce new activities aimed at addressing drug treatment and health in prisons. These new activities take into account the Pompidou Group's South-East European cooperation expertise in this field and put in the heart of discussion human rights. The committee also adopted its provisional work programme for 2022 and welcomed Slovenia as its 18th member.

Tunisia handed the Presidency over to Cyprus after two fruitful and efficient years.
