Launch of research project in Ukrainian juvenile prisons

An international team of researchers met in Kiev on 4 September 2017 to finalise methodology and a guide with interview questions. This questionnaire will be used to interview boys and girls who participated in a 'Family Conference' in Melitopol and Priluky juvenile prisons, as well as their families and other concerned parties. For the next two months, a researcher will travel throughout Ukraine to meet the different interview partners and observe the implementation of a Family Conference in Priluky prison. The research assesses the quality of this Conferencing tool and is a prerequisite for a decision by the top leadership of the prison administration on whether the tool should be adopted as new standardised practice in all Ukrainian juvenile prisons. Since 2016, Family Conferencing has been successfully piloted by Ukrainian prison staff with the support of the Pompidou Group and the Dutch non-profit organisation Friends of Priluky. As a result, more than 40 Family Conference meetings have taken place in Ukrainian juvenile prisons in the last two years.
