Local authorities who took part in the ELDW in the past editions said:
“ELDW leads to a better involvement of citizens in public life and interaction with local authorities, testing citizens’ acquaintance with the participatory tools and their trust in local institutions, improving social cohesion and respect of the others in the community, taking part in a network of European municipalities and regions keen to improve local democracy in their place and across Europe”.
« Human rights make for more inclusive communities» is the leading theme of the 2012 edition of the Week.
When? The ELDW 2012 officially takes place between 15 and 21st October, however should this coincide with other events or local elections, local authorities may choose to organise the ELDW on more convenient dates in October where possible.

A handbook to prepare the ELDW 2012
All the necessary information required to better organise the initiatives of the 2012 edition of the European Local Democracy Week (15-21 October) is included in a handbook available on-line.
The aim is to raise awareness about this pan-European event, which, for the sixth year, will bring local authorities and citizens from the widest number of European countries closer.

Municipalities and regions are registering their participation in the ELDW.
October is still a while away, but to ensure the best results, effective planning is needed. See the first towns registered and their planned events.
The National Associations take part in the ELDW 2012
The National ELDW co-ordinators of the Associations of Local and Regional Authorities are now disseminating the European Local Democracy Week in their countries. They replied to a small questionnaire where they shortly summarise their engagement. SALAR (Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions) organise a meeting about the ELDW 2012 edition.
A meeting focused on ELDW will take place in Stockholm (SALARs Office) on the 23rd May. Mr. Lars O.Molin, member of the Congress and chair of the Monitoring Committee, will inform the participants about the Congress activities and priorities, as well as about the ELDW 2012 edition. More….
