EUROPEAN LOCAL DEMOCRACY WEEK
The “European Local Democracy Week” (ELDW) is an annual European event with simultaneous national and local events organised by participating local authorities in all Council of Europe member States. The purpose is to foster the knowledge of local democracy and promote the idea of democratic participation at a local level.

The week including 15 October has been chosen as the European Charter of Local Self-Government was opened for signature on that date in 1985.

The Week is a Council of Europe initiative. Its role is to co-ordinate the European dimension of the project, whereas the national and local implementation of the Week is being supported in each participating country by the correspondents designated by the national associations of local authorities, listed on the website.

European Local Democracy Week 2010: Preparations underway
The Congress is working in two parallel directions to raise awareness of the ELDW 2010 by fostering its co-operation with national and European associations and networks of local authorities, and by directly involving the maximum number of towns and cities to take part. “Several institutional websites such as the Committee of the Regions’ (CEMR), the Deutscher Stadtetag’s, and the Eumayors’ (EU Covenant of Mayors) are publishing news about the ELDW and endorsing the Week’s logo, and this is an important sign of its prominence” stated Keith Whitmore, President of the Congress Institutional Committee and Political Coordinator for ELDW, congratulating the Congress on these first results. Congress and EU Committee of the Regions join their efforts to fight climate change at local level
The Congress was present at the annual conference of the “Covenant of Mayors” which was held on 4 May in Brussels. On this occasion, mayors of the 27 EU member states discussed how to enhance the use of renewable energies, energy saving and reducing CO2 emissions at local level. The “Covenant” was already signed by over 1200 mayors. The Congress - through its European Local Democracy Week-event -contributes to this effort, by having chosen ''The impact of sustainable communities in fighting climate change'' as leading theme for the ELDW 2010. In Brussels it will show its ELDW presentation stand in the Atrium of the Committee of the Regions. (more ...)
