Two-Day Seminar on the Safety of Journalists

A two-day seminar on the safety of journalists was held in Kyiv on April 15 and 16 2014 as part of the program "Integration of European Standards in Ukrainian Media Environment". The seminar covered the issues related to personal, legal and technical safety of journalists.

The opening speech was given by OSCE Representative of the - Dunja Mijatovic and Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine - Troy Lulashnyk and the closing speech by Director of Human Rights Directorate of the Council of Europe - Christos Giakoumopoulos. The sessions were chaired and monitored by highly qualified local and international professionals.

Despite the escalation of the situation in the Eastern part of Ukraine, the Seminar had a very good attendance.

About 90 participants altogether for two days attended the event, among them about 60 journalists from national and regional media (Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, Kherson, Mykolayiv, Zaporizhzhya, Zakarpattia, Lviv, Chernihiv, Cherkassy, Zhytomyr, Ternopil).

The event was also attended by: 15 representatives of lead media NGOs (National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, National Media Trade Union of Ukraine, Media Law Institute, Association of Media Lawyers of Ukraine, Institute of Mass Information, Regional Press Development Institute), 5 representatives of law enforcement bodies (Ministry of Interior and representatives of Prosecutor General’s Office) and several representatives of other International organisations (OSCE and Embassy of Canada).

The Seminar had been a success, particularly in view of its timely nature. It has been positively noted by both invited experts and attendees, that the Seminar had a very tangible and practical character, managing to give some concrete answers to the questions relating to the work of journalists.
