COMEX 85th plenary meeting

The Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages held its 85th plenary meeting from 9 to 11 June 2026 in Strasbourg.

During the meeting, the Committee adopted its 6th evaluation report on the application of the Charter by Austria, which will be transmitted to the authorities for possible comments within a deadline of two months after transmission. The evaluation reports and the state comments will then be made public and submitted to the Committee of Ministers.

The Committee also adopted the mid-term report on the implementation of its recommendations for immediate action by Croatia, which will be published in the coming days and submitted to the Committee of Ministers for information.

On 11 June, the Committee of Experts held an exchange of views with Terezia Rostas, advocate for the Roma community and founder of Welcoming Cultures UK and Care for Young People’s Future CIC, and Caterina Bolognese, Head of the Gender Equality Division of the Council of Europe. The exchange addressed the important role women play in transmitting regional or minority language and culture across generations; how gender affects the use, visibility and sustainability of these languages; as well as how the Committee of Experts could better reflect gender equality aspects through its monitoring work.

The Committee will hold its next plenary meeting in November 2026 in Strasbourg.
