S.M.A.R.T stands for Specific Methodologies and Resources for Radio Trainers

The SMART project is an on-line tool created by very experienced community radio trainers to address an identified community media training need. The tool is available in German, English, Basque, French and Hungarian.

Training in community media addresses communities and individuals who often are not represented by the mainstream media. In many countries persons who are active in community media belong to ethnic, cultural or social minorities, e.g. immigrants, people with specific needs, specific age groups.

Building on the distinct training framework that exists already within community media, SMART collected training units for all relevant sectors of work in community radio and focuses on specific training situations and create training modules that provide specialised training and resources to help seldom heard communities of people acquire the skills needed to make radio – such as visually impaired people, people with learning difficulties and migrant women.

The units were collected, tested and adapted by international, highly- experienced radio trainers.

Trainers can choose from a large selection of ‘Activities’ providing step-by-step support. Materials include video-based ‘technical tutorials’ covering topics such how to create a running order or this video on how to set up the studio for a visually impaired person.

There are also PDF based ‘tips for trainers’ and ‘handouts’ on a variety of subjects such as working with migrant women and Radio Journalism Work
