Radio ARA is an independent, non-commercial radio station that has been operating in Luxembourg as a community radio station since 1992, initially serving alternative communities such as environmental, feminist and LBGQ groups, as well as specific music communities.

ARA is a citizen’s media, it was founded on the principle of free speech and free participation. Everyone has the possibility to participate to the program of Radio ARA as a volunteer as long as the internal rules are respected: no advertising, no sexual offence, no hate speech, no racism. Introducing people to media literacy skills of media production is one of the main goals of the Radio.

Radio ARA plays a key role in media pluralism in Luxembourg. As an alternative media ARA sounds different at every hour, it promotes different stories, different ways of making radio, and different styles of music. ARA sounds a lot like the mix that compose the Luxembourgish society, due to a strong relationship with its territory and with the communities that it represents. The mission of Radio ARA in this sense is to include every small groups of the society that don’t fit any gender, political, ethno-cultural or social categorisation.

In 2000, a team of English speakers joined to help address the needs of the growing English speaking community. In 2009 the increase in the number of Luxembourg residents from new European member states meant more changes to reflect Luxembourg’s diversity.

In 2016 as Europe’s refugee crisis grew ARA started the Salaam Show in Arabic. Over the past five years, as Luxembourg’s diversity increased, the needs of other marginalised newcomers to Luxembourg were identified and the station started to recruit interested volunteers for other international community shows, such as Farsi and Tigrinya. These shows were scheduled to start mid 2020.

In March 2020, in response to the pandemic, the volunteers who had shown interest in creating community shows were contacted and asked to help create Local News in various languages of marginalized groups. As a result, Daily Local News was produced in Arabic, Farsi and Tigrinya within the first days of lockdown and was broadcast Monday to Friday. Relevant information was translated into the required languages and aired twice daily.

The News was also pushed out on all social media platforms. As word of the project spread, more volunteers contacted Radio ARA, expressing their communities needs and in response bulletins in Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, Albanian, and Portuguese were produced. This COVID NEWS project ran for three months until the end of the State of Emergency. It continues in a reduced scale today, with English daily and other language bulletins twice weekly.

In addition, over the summer of 2020 Radio ARA worked with individuals from the Arabic, Farsi & Tigrinya community resulting in a number of community shows being broadcast in various languages.

Every project of Radio ARA is supported by a diverse source of funding: donations, membership fees, small sponsorships or public subsidies. This system allows Ara to be an independent hub for creativity and a safe space for freedom of speech.
