The Freedom of Experession and CDMSI division participates in a consultative meeting on youth

On 22-23 January 2025, the Freedom of Expression and CDMSI division and Marius Jitea, Youth Rapporteur for CDMSI (Romania) and member to the Expert Committee on the Implications of Generative AI on Freedom of Expression (MSI-AI), joined the consultative meeting ‘"How Confident?... Artificial Intelligence, Young People and Youth Work", organised by the Youth Department and held in the European Youth Centre.

Aim of the meeting was to address developments in Artificial Intelligence and their impact on young people’s human rights, youth work and youth policy in the context of Council of Europe standards and approaches. The programme and list of participants are available on the youth portal.

On this occasion, insights were provided about AI’s effect on freedom of expression, exploring ongoing work at Expert Committee’s level, goals of the Council of Europe Campaign Journalists Matter, relevant instruments in the relevant field, including AI and journalism; algorithmic systems; disinformation; hate speech and strategic lawsuits against public participation. The exchange also allowed for exploring possible venues to ensure the fruitful engagement of the youth sector.

The outcome of these discussions will shape future Council of Europe’s work on AI and recommendations for its Youth Department’s programme.
