State of the Press Freedom in Europe: Annual Report of the Safety of Journalists Platform

“… the alerts published on the Safety of Journalists Platform show a growing diversity of threats, pressures and constraints under which journalists must carry out their mission.”[1]

Today, on 5 March 2024, the Platform to Promote the Protection of Journalism and Safety of Journalists launched its report "Press Freedom in Europe: Time to Turn the Tide".

The report is prepared by the Platform’s Partner Organisations, a coalition of fifteen press freedom NGOs and journalists associations. It highlights key areas of law, policy and practices affecting media freedom and safety of journalists in Europe and identifies actions required to improve effective protection of journalists.

Among the other important observations, the report outlines significant findings and conclusions concerning the primary obstacles confronting media freedom in Europe. These include instances where investigative journalists have been summoned or subjected to raids by state security agencies, detained or arrested on charges of terrorism or extremism, and instances where journalist organisations have engaged in protracted struggles within EU institutions to ensure that journalists are exempted from state surveillance under the European Media Freedom Act.

The report is available in English and French language.
