The Council of Europe' s voice was echoed at the annual Global Conference of the World Press Freedom Day 2022, hosted by UNESCO and the Republic of Uruguay on 2-5 May 2022 under the theme “Journalism under Digital Siege” in Punta del Este. Rodica Ciochina of the Media and Internet Division of the Council of Europe shared the latest standard setting work and activities carried in the area of the digital impact on freedom of expression, safety of journalists, access to information, privacy, as well as the unique initiatives of the Organisation in shaping the future legal instruments on artificial intelligence through a human rights, rule of law and democracy perspective.

World Press Freedom Day Global Conference reunited key stakeholders including policymakers, journalists, media representatives, activists, cybersecurity managers and legal experts adressing the threats posed by increased surveillance to press freedom and privacy.

Following the decision of the Committee of Ministers on 16 March 2022 the Russian Federation is no longer a member of the Council of Europe. The website will be updated as soon as possible to take account of this development.
