Retour Naardermeer Nature Reserve

Naardermeer Nature Reserve

The Naardermeer is a wetland of 1,080 hectares in the centre of the Netherlands and forms the northern part of the Vechtplassen region, which consists of various lakes and marshes. The nature reserve itself is bound in the West, North and East by infrastructure and cities. The Naardermeer has a rich variety of habitat types which are characteristic for a wetland fed by seepage, such as quaking bogs. The area is of great international importance for a number of breeding bird species such as Purple Heron and Great Cormorant. Next to that, many migratory birds can be found there. A recent highlight was the arrival of the Otter, which has been extinct from the Naardermeer for 50 years. Cooperation with the authorities and other institutions is well developed to guarantee and improve the quality of the area.
