Retour Doñana National Park

Doñana National Park

The Doñana National Park, in the extreme southwest of Spain, is an extraordinary wetland located on the right bank of the Guadalquivir river, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The interrelation of the ocean with the Guadalquivir river has been the main factor generating the great diversity of ecosystems and landscapes existing here. Next to the estuary of the river we find 38 kilometres of virgin beaches surrounded by mobile dunes of fine sand; the most important in Europe. Besides, in Doñana, it is possible to find another kind of coniferous forest and cork oaks, extensions of scrub and lagoons, marshes and peat bogs, all of them in an excellent state of conservation.

Doñana has fauna, especially birds, and flora, many species of which are endemic and very valuable. Also, this corner of the Iberian Peninsula represents an essential refuge for a significant number of endangered species, such as the Iberian Lynx (the most threatened feline in the world), Spanish imperial eagle, red kite, marbled teal, white-headed duck, red-knobbed coot, ferruginous duck, Eurasian bittern and black tern. Moreover, the park has international relevance thanks to the high number of species of breeding birds, wintering and migrating birds that find in this wetland a place to rest and an irreplaceable refuge on the Eastern Atlantic route.

Also confirming the high value of this protected area are the long list of nominations for national and international status that have been granted: including the World Heritage, Biosphere Reserve, Wetland of International Importance, Special Conservation Area, Special Protection Area for Birds, Green List and the European Diploma.
