A new perspective on the Italian deportation to Auschwitz

On 16 January, at the Ateneo Veneto in Venice, was presented the book by Laura Fontana "Gli italiani ad Auschwitz (1943-1945). Deportazioni, lavoro forzato. Un mosaico di vittime", published by the State Museum of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The author has been dealing with the history of the Shoah for years and represents Italy at the Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris. The book traces the stories of two groups of Jewish deportees and political prisoners.

Built on renewed archival research, the author highlights the stories of 1200 non-Jewish Italians who in 1944 were interned and sent to forced labour. The result is a narrative of individual stories in which deportation paths, experiences and memories are intertwined with central themes to grasp the history of Auschwitz.

Several attendees took part in the presentation led by Marina Scarpa Campos, National Vice President of the "Associazione Figli della Shoah", Michela Zanon, of the Jewish Museum/CoopCulture of Venice and Luisella Pavan-Woolfe, Director of the Italian Office of the Council of Europe. The vice-president Prof. Filippo Maria Carinci conveyed the most cordial greetings of the Ateneo Veneto.
