Tunisia and the Council of Europe Launch a new Neighborhood Partnership for 2026–2029

The Council of Europe and the Tunisian Government launched the Council of Europe Neighborhood Partnership with Tunisia 2026–2029 on June 11 in Tunis. The launch ceremony was attended by senior representatives of the Tunisian Government, the Council of Europe, and its member states.

This strategic cooperation framework reflects the shared commitment of Tunisia and the Council of Europe to continue strengthening a partnership that has been steadily growing for over a decade.

The cooperation between Tunisia and the Council of Europe is based on a shared recognition of the major challenges facing our societies, on common values, and on mutual understanding and respect,” said Claus Neukirch, Director of Programme Co-ordination at the Council of Europe, in his opening remarks.

This new cooperation framework lays the groundwork for joint action to address emerging challenges related to the protection of human rights in the context of artificial intelligence, data protection, and the fight against cybercrime. It also aims to strengthen the protection of vulnerable groups and enhance cooperation in preventing and combating transnational criminal activities, particularly human trafficking and the smuggling of migrants.

This initiative builds on the achievements of the previous co-operation phase (2022–2025), during which Tunisia acceded to the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, signed the Medicrime Convention on combating counterfeiting of medical products, and was invited to accede to the Macolin Convention on the manipulation of sports competitions.
