Pompidou Group Bureau reviews progress and sets priorities for next steps

International co-operation on drugs and addictions needs to evolve as new challenges emerge. This was the focus of the Pompidou Group Bureau’s meeting on 29 September, as members took stock of progress under the current Work Programme and looked at what is needed to carry its work forward.

The Bureau reviewed implementation of the 2026–2029 Work Programme, including progress on activities carried out between December 2025 and September 2026. Discussions also considered membership and engagement, with a focus on how the Group can sustain active participation and ensure that its co-operation continues to respond to the needs of its members.

Emerging challenges were also in focus. Members received an update on preparations for the first meeting of the Drafting Committee on Risks and Harms of Online and Digital Addictions and considered its next steps. This work reflects the Pompidou Group’s role in bringing countries together to share experience and develop collective responses to new and evolving challenges.  The Bureau also discussed preparations for upcoming activities, including the 38th Session of the Co-operation Group of Drug Control Services at Airports and Mail Centres, the Regional Thematic Seminar on Emerging Synthetic Drug Trends and Challenges and the 3rd Law Enforcement Conference on Drug Trafficking, Organised Crime Networks and International Co-operation. These activities will bring practitioners and experts together to exchange experience and strengthen co-operation in response to challenges posed by illicit drug trafficking.

Across the different areas of work, this meeting reflected the continued commitment of members to maintaining strong co-operation, sharing experience and working together on common challenges. As the Pompidou Group moves forward with its 2026–2029 Work Programme, this commitment will be key to sustaining momentum and translating shared priorities into practical action.
