Awareness seminar on press freedom and journalistic ethics in Morocco

The Council of Europe, in cooperation with the Press House and the National Union of the Moroccan Press, organised a two-day awareness seminar on press freedom and journalistic ethics in Morocco. This meeting took place on 15-16 March 2016 in the Press House in Tangier.

More than 40 journalists and journalism, law and communication students from Northern Morocco discussed with Council of Europe and Moroccan speakers legitimate limitations on the right to freedom of expression, the role of self-regulation and the importance of journalistic ethics in a reform context. Participants thus became familiar with the principles stemming from the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and Council of Europe standards on protecting freedom of expression. The meeting also provided a platform for dialogue on the key challenges currently facing journalists in Morocco.

This activity was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe project "Promoting freedom of expression, media independence and plurality in Morocco" which is funded by a voluntary contribution from Norway.
