Advancing application of standards of the European Convention on Human Rights by the judiciary in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Meeting of H.E. Ambassador Stefánek with Mr. Murtezić, Director of the Judicial and Prosecutorial Training Centre in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina

H.E. Ambassador Stefánek met today with Mr. Murtezić, Director of the Centre for Education of Judges and Prosecutors in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (CEST FBiH). They discussed current trends in advancing application of standards of the European Convention on Human Rights by the judiciary in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the ongoing cooperation between the two institutions.

Specifically, they focused on freedom of expression and the media in Bosnia and Herzegovina related to which, the Council of Europe, co-financed by the European Union, recently began implementation of the regional Joint Project „Reinforcing Judicial Expertize on Freedom of Expression and the Media in South-East Europe“ (JUFREX).

Within JUFREX framework a grant agreement was formalized between the institutions for provision of capacity development exercises for judges and prosecutors on application of standards of Article 10 (Freedom of Expression) of the European Convention on Human Rights .

Similar grant was already signed with the Centre for Education of Judges and Public Prosecutors in Republika Srpska (CEST RS), whereas additional agreements are expected to be completed with the bar associations related to provision of capacity development for lawyers.

Next week, a four-day Training of Trainers will take place in Mostar, where a group of 20 participants will undergo an extensive training on Article 10 standards and will share their knowledge through a series of capacity development events covered by the abovementioned grant agreements.
