Back Ukraine strengthens protection and resilience mechanisms for journalists working in wartime conditions

Throughout 2025, Ukraine continued strengthening practical protection mechanisms for journalists operating in wartime and other high-risk environments through cooperation between public authorities, journalists’ organisations and civil society partners. Activities included legal assistance programmes, psychological support, access to protective equipment and technical resources through Journalist Solidarity Centres and Media Bases, specialised training for journalists and law-enforcement officers, and expert discussions on emerging risks affecting media workers.

Particular attention was devoted to new threats linked to the increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in combat zones. Discussions involving journalists, media organisations and experts resulted in recommendations aimed at improving access to drone detection technologies, strengthening safety training and adapting protection protocols for journalists working near frontline areas.
