Training for lawyers on Freedom of Expression & Defamation - Local and International Standards in Pristina

Together with the Bar Association, JUFREX organised a training for lawyers on national and international standards on defamation. About 20 young lawyers participated in the training.

The training was organised in three sessions: national legal framework on defamation, national institutional framework and European Court of Human Rights standards on defamation. The national part of the training was covered by two local certified trainers while the international standards on defamation were deeply elaborated by the international expert.

The first session was focused on decriminalisation of defamation and to the most crucial part of the national law. The second one was dedicated to institutional framework, particularly to the role of Independent Media Commission and Kosovo Press Council. The last and most interesting part according to the participants was the lecture on ECtHR standards. By referring to article 10 of the ECHR and specific case law, the expert provided the best standards on various aspects of defamation.

A special focus was paid to what is meant by interference with the right to freedom of expression in the name of defamation.

By the end of the training, young lawyers mentioned the need to have regular forums of this form in order to exchange views with each other, which subsequently would help them to put in practice the knowledge gained from the trainers and the experiences of their peers.

This event was implemented with the financial assistance of the European Union and the Council of Europe. The views expressed herein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union.
