Supporting Albanian legal professionals in addressing their training needs on freedom of expression standards

Representatives of the High Judicial Council (HJC), High Prosecutorial Council (HPC), School of Magistrates (SoM) as well as media magistrates, local and international experts on freedom of expression attended an online session organised by the School of Magistrates with the support of the European Union and the Council of Europe joint action JUFREX 2. They shared views concerning the capacity building needs of judges, prosecutors, and other legal professionals in the field of freedom of expression with the aim to improve the domestic application of Article 10 of European Convention on Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights case-law on Freedom of Expression.

The discussions brought forth new aspects and ideas for future action, which better address the needs of the Albanian judiciary, including tailored training curriculum, that would enable the application of the European standards on freedom of expression by local courts. An important highlight of the meeting was the identification of the immediate needs for training of the newly appointed media magistrates tasked with maintaining institutional communication and exchange with the media.

This activity was organised with the support of the action "Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Media in Albania" part of the Joint Program of the European Union and the Council of Europe "Horizontal Instrument for the Western Balkans and Turkey II".
